The element Carbon has the relative atomic mass of 12.011. Carbon allotropes occur as diamond, graphite and as fullerenes. Carbon compounds occur as carbonaceous rock such as chalk and limestone, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons in petroleum, coal and natural gas, and as part of organic substances.

In its amorphous form, the Carbon element is known as coal, charcoal, and soot. Other common carbon compounds are carbon monoxide, carbon disulfide, and carbon halides.
