SI units

In order to simplify and modernize the metric system, an international agreement was reached in 1960 specifying a particular choice of metric units for use in scientific measurements. These preferred unites are called SI units, after the French Systeme International d'Unites.

SI base units

The SI system has seven base SI units. Other SI units are derived from these base SI units. Below is a list of the SI units.

 Physical Quantity
Name of SI unit
Abbreviation of SI unit
SI unit for Mass Kilogram kg
SI unit for Length Meter m
SI unit for Time Second

s (or sec)

SI unit for Electric current Ampere
SI unit for Temperature Kelvin K
SI unit for Luminous intensity Candela cd
SI unit for Amount of substance Mole mol

Non Si units are being phased out but there are still some that are commonly used by scientists.

SI unit for density

Density is widely use to characterize substances. It is defined as the amount of mass in a unit volume of the substance. The basic SI unit of density is kg/m3, density is more commonly expressed in units of grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3).
