Isomers

Definition isomers

Isomers are compounds that have the same number and types of atoms. Isomers have the same molecular formula but differ in the way they are combined with each other.

How are isomers differ?

Isomers can differ by:

  1. the bonding sequence called structural isomerism or constitutional isomerism.
  2. the way their atoms are arranged spatially called stereoisomerism.

Types of isomers

Among many types of isomers are:

  • conformational isomers
  • configurational isomers
  • geometrical isomers
  • optical isomers
  • enantiomers
  • diastereomers
