Who discovered iodine?

The element Iodine was discovered by the French chemist Barnard Courtois in 1811.

Everyone needs some form of iodine in their diet. Sometimes a low iodine diet is preferred but iodine deficiency may result in bad health problems. Someone with a severe case of iodine deficiency from persistent low iodine diet can lead to impaired thyroid hormone synthesis and other thyroid problems. Iodine deficiency is also referred to as IDDs.
